|Spring is here, bringing us sunny skies and warmer weather. And also… fleas. Fleas, along with ticks and mosquitoes, become more active during the spring and summer months, so it is important to take necessary steps to prevent infestation. Fleas are the number one allergen for dogs and cats. Their bites can cause severe skin irritations and illnesses such as tapeworms or Bartonella (also known as “cat scratch disease”). Ticks are just as dangerous, as they often carry lyme disease, which can be life threatening for your pets. To keep your dog or cat healthy this spring, and rid of fleas and ticks, prevention is key. We’ve compiled our top five picks for flea and tick prevention products to help you choose which is best for your pet and household. |
NexGard Chewables® (for dogs only)
NexGard is a beef flavored chewable tablet that protects your dog from fleas and ticks for 30 days, no matter the season. NexGard is FDA approved and highly recommended by veterinarians for its effectiveness and the fact that it’s easy to administer (pups love the beef flavor!). This prescription medication is suitable for dogs 8 weeks and older, and is available in proper dosage for small, medium, or large dogs.
Bravecto® (for dogs and cats)
Highly rated for its ease of application, is the prescription medication Bravecto. One application of this topical solution lasts 12 weeks, nearly three times longer than most other brands, and is highly effective in killing and preventing fleas and ticks. As with other topical medications, some irritations of your pet’s skin may occur. Bravecto is also available in a chewable tablet for dogs only.
K9 Advantix® II (for dogs only)
K9 Advantix II is a topical solution that starts working within 12 hours of application and lasts for 30 days. It has a high rating due to the protection it gives from lice and mosquitoes, in addition to fleas and ticks. This medication is also waterproof just 24 hours after application, so you can bathe your dog and let them swim in their favorite watering hole, without the worry of losing effectiveness. Unlike NexGard and Bravecto, Advantix does not require a prescription.
Frontline Plus® (for dogs and cats)
A trusted name for over twenty years, Frontline Plus delivers protection from adult fleas, flea eggs, flea larvae, chewing lice, and ticks, with both dog and cat formulas available. Frontline Plus is fast acting, waterproof, and lasts for up to 30 days. This topical solution is virtually odorless, but may leave an oily residue on your pet’s fur for the first 48 hours. Frontline is available without a prescription, with formulas for puppies and kittens, as well as adult and senior dogs and cats.
Seresto® Flea and Tick Collar (for dogs and cats)
For more budget conscious pet owners, this medicated collar may be a good solution to prevent fleas and ticks from infesting your dog or cat. The collar is odorless and non-greasy, and provides protection for up to 8 months, which can be more convenient than monthly topical ointments. However, flea collars in general typically do not provide the same ‘whole body’ protection that other medications will. Also, flea collars can be toxic to humans, which is something to consider if there are children in the home.
As with any medication, be sure to consult your veterinarian before administering any flea and tick prevention.
